    Forside Database structure

    Database structure

The database of the project will be structured as a 3-domain SQL-database. To the right a simplified model is depicted.

A domain is in this respect a group of database tables/data structures sharing the same problem complex.

    UNIT

The domain UNIT contains data concerning administrative units, and not least their mutual interconnection (e.g. a local council area consists of such and such parishes, etc.). As such, it is the centre of the DigDag data structure as it handles not only administrative units and geographical specifications, but also the connection points to which archives and public institutions can relate their data by means of geographical codes.

    NAME

The domain NAME constitutes its own problem complex, i.e. the handling of names of places and administrative units, name changes, dates of name form validity, source-forms, etymology, etc. The majority of data originates from the Name Research Section as well as the National Survey and Cadastre.

    GEO

The GEO domain is the home of geographical information, where the core spatial unit, the ejerlav (townland), is used for spatial aggregation of administrative units. Furthermore, the GEO domain contains place-name coordinates and administrative centre points, such as customs offices, churches and local courts.
